SUMMARY:How to become a computational social scientist
DESCRIPTION:Scientific research and teaching are increasingly influenced by computational tools\, methods and paradigms. The social sciences are no different\, with many new forms of social data only available or practical through computational means (Kitchen\, 2014). \nWhile social science research has always been marked by technological approaches to some degree\, the field of computational social science involves the use of tools\, data and methods that require a different skill set and mindset. \nThis free workshop is an introduction to computational social science. It offers attendees a chance to understand and discuss what computational social science is\, what it is good for\, how to become a computational social scientist\, and the basic steps to follow in an ideal computational social science research project. \nThe workshop intersperses instruction with discussion and gives participants the chance to develop a research project idea through several steps. The workshop is suitable for absolute beginners and NO CODING SKILLS are required. \nPresenters: Dr J. Kasmire \nKitchen\, R. (2014). Big Data\, new epistemologies and paradigm shifts. Big Data & Society\, https://doi.org/10.1177/2053951714528481. \nLevel: Any level\, from absolute beginner to statistics whizExperience/knowledge required: No specific knowledge required\, but it will make much more sense if you currently (or plan to) conduct social science researchTarget audience: Social scientists who are interested in or confused by what computational and empirical social science is about\, or who know they want to start doing more computational work but don’t know how to get started \nWe will be using Mentimeter to ask questions in this workshop so you may benefit from having a second device ready for this\, such as a smartphone. \nThis event is part of our UK Data Service introductory training series: Autumn 2022.

SUMMARY:GESIS Meet the experts: “Linking surveys with electoral integrity assessments to explain political trust”
DESCRIPTION:This talk presents a linking approach that combines expert assessments on electoral integrity with survey data to study how electoral integrity affects the way in which election results translate into citizen attitudes towards the political system. It introduces a causal mechanism that links political losing to political trust via evaluations of electoral fairness: citizens who voted for the losing camp are more likely to view the electoral process as unfair than citizens who voted for the winning camp\, resulting in political distrust. It further suggests that the effects of political losing depend on the level of electoral integrity. In conditions where elections are conducted in a free and fair manner\, even those who voted for the losing camp have little reason to suspect foul play. Whenever there are actual indications of electoral malpractice\, however\, political losers have much more reason to doubt the integrity of the electoral process than those who are content with the election outcome. The analysis makes use of a unique dataset that ex-post harmonizes survey data from three cross-national survey projects (Asian Barometer Survey\, European Social Survey\, Latinobarómetro) and links this survey data with expert assessments of electoral integrity provided by the Varieties-of-Democracy (V-Dem) project to cover 45 democracies in Europe\, East Asia\, and Latin America. The talk details how respondents (in the survey data) were matched to elections (in the V-Dem data) and discusses challenges arising from survey fieldwork periods not being aligned with election cycles. \nSpeaker: \nDr. Marlene Mauk

SUMMARY:Reproducibility and confidential or proprietary data: can it be done?
DESCRIPTION:CRRESS invites you to join our December webinar “Reproducibility and confidential or proprietary data: can it be done?“. Paulo Guimarães (Banco de Portugal\, BPLIM)\, John Horton (MIT)\, Lars Vilhuber (Cornell University) compose the panel. Aleksandr Michuda (Cornell University) will moderate the session. \nThe fourth panel of CRRESS\, The Conference on Reproducibility and Replicability in Economics and the Social Sciences\, will be held on December 13\, 2022. Exceptionally\, we begin at 12:15 PM Eastern Time\, earlier than other series sessions. \nRegister to join the session on Zoom. \nWhat happens to reproducibility when data are confidential or proprietary? Many journals can only ask that detailed access procedures be provided in a ReadMe file\, but what mechanisms could be used to conduct computational reproducibility checks on such data? Should authors temporarily share their data with the journal for the purposes of reproducibility verification\, even if they are not part of the public data replication package? Is it feasible to use a network of “insiders” to run code provided as part of a data replication package to assess reproducibility? Could a “certified run” be used? \nThe Conference on Reproducibility and Replicability in Economics and the Social Sciences (CRRESS) is a monthly series of virtual and in-person panels on the topics of reproducibility\, replicability\, and transparency in the social sciences. Each month\, a panel of experts will discuss a particular topic with relevance to the overall theme of reproducibility and transparency. We invite anyone with an interest in social science research to attend.  \nCRRESS is led by Lars Vilhuber and Aleksandr Michuda\, Cornell University\, who organize the panels together with Ian Schmutte (UGA) and Marie Connolly (UQAM). Funding by the National Science Foundation is gratefully acknowledged. Participation is free\, but registration is required. Learn more at https://labordynamicsinstitute.github.io/crress/.

SUMMARY:4th Symposium on Big Data and Research Syntheses in Psychology with a special focus on Machine Learning & Open Science
DESCRIPTION:You are invited to participate in the 4th symposium on big data and research syntheses in psychology to be held in Frankfurt am Main\, Germany (May 8–10\, 2023).We are pleased to collaborate with Europe’s Journal of Psychology (EJOP):Selected contributions from the symposium will be invited for full-text submission to a special thematic section of EJOP!The 2023 edition builds on the success of our prior events: \nResearch Synthesis and Big Data in Psychology\, May 17-21\, 2021\, online \nResearch Synthesis incl. Pre-Conference Symposium: Big Data in Psychology\, May 27-31\, 2019\, Dubrovnik\, Croatia \nTwin Conference Research Synthesis / Big Data in Psychology 2018\, June 7-9\, 2018\, Trier\, Germany \nThe symposium will address the question:Psychological research in times of big data: How can machine learning and open science help to cope with the information overload? What big data and research syntheses have in common is the challenge of dealing with large\, novel\, and ever-growing amounts of data in psychology. On the one hand\, data from social media\, as well as sensor data\, are of growing interest in psychology. On the other hand\, science is producing more publications and at a higher rate\, making it increasingly difficult to keep track of the current state of knowledge. In recent years\, machine learning has become a key tool to address these challenges. Methodological advancements along with freely available software\, as well as advances in data storage and computational capacities\, make it possible to deal with data of large volume\, velocity\, and variety. There are also promising applications for summarizing scientific evidence\, for example\, through automation in screening a large and dynamically growing body of literature. At the same time\, open science plays an important role: On the one hand\, to create more efficient workflows by sharing data\, methodological documentation\, technical tools and analysis scripts within science. Especially when applying machine learning methods\, transparent documentation and provision of the analysis code are indispensable for their reproducibility. On the other hand\, to make scientific evidence accessible and usable by communicating it to the outside world in a way that is understandable to laypersons. The symposium is scheduled to take place in Frankfurt am Main\, Germany\, in May 2023 and will last three days. On the first day\, introductions to open science and machine learning will provide the basics to the audience. The second day addresses different applications of machine learning\, with a focus on the areas of sensor data and social media\, as well as automation of research syntheses. Finally\, the third day is devoted to the importance and purposeful practices of open science: To improve workflows within science and make findings more available and understandable to the world beyond academia.

SUMMARY:Symposium: Critical Perspectives on the Metascience Reform Movement
DESCRIPTION:Metascience is often defined as the scientific investigation of science itself with the aim to improve science. This ‘improving’ part of metascience has been called a reform movement. While the intention to improve science is generally laudable\, metascience and the associated movement(s) are not without their critics. The metascience reform movement has for instance been characterized as among other things\, neoliberal\, positivistic\, atheoretical\, technological\, moralizing\, bureaucratic\, homogenizing\, mechanistic\, quantitative\, psychological (psychologizing)\, social\, civilizing\, bullying\, exclusive\, coercive\, activist\, and normative. In this symposium some of those critical perspectives will be presented and discussed. \nWelcome \n6:00 am PST / 9:00 am EST / 3:00 pm CEST \nOpening remarks from Tim Errington\, COS’s Senior Director of Research\, and Sven Ulpts\, PhD Fellow\, Aarhus University\, Department of Political Science – Danish Centre for Studies in Research and Research Policy. \nShamed Into Good Science \n6:10 am PST / 9:10 am EST / 3:10 pm CESTScientific reform has proposed various improvements to the research process\, some of which have been put into place. These proposals\, or innovations\, include preregistration\, registered reports\, post-registration\, (data) sharing infrastructures and -platforms and more. However\, beyond the ‘process innovations’\, scientific reform also generated new forms of collaboration towards knowledge-making in which novel approaches to harnessing trust and distrust are built into the collaboration\, including but not limited to ManyLabs approaches. The many “ManyLabs” in existence display diverse and experimental epistemic and moral strategies and ideals for scientific organisation and practice. I will speak about the social processes that drive these new processes and colaborations. \nThe Invisible Workload of Open Research \n6:35 am PST / 9:35 am EST / 3:35 pm CEST \nIt is acknowledged that conducting open research requires additional time and effort compared to conducting ‘closed’ research. However\, this additional work is often discussed only in abstract terms\, a discourse which ignores the practicalities of how researchers are expected to find the time to engage with these practices in the context of their broader role as multifaceted academics. There is a clear danger that additional expectations to engage in open practices add to the workload of often already overburdened academics and research professionals. Using theories of administrative burden and workload creep\, I discuss individual and systematic responsibilities to mitigate this. \nWhy Replication Is Underrated \n7:00 am PST / 10:00 am EST / 4:00 pm CEST \nI will argue that replication is underrated because it can do more epistemic work than is usually acknowledged. In the current philosophical and metascientific literature replication is depicted as a backward-looking tool: it is used to increase trust in published data. I will argue that replication also plays an important forward-looking role\, as it can help researchers to build trust in novel data that is being generated. To understand this forward-looking role it is important to build a better understanding of the ways in which replication is deeply integrated into everyday research practice (Guttinger 2019; Peterson and Panofsky 2021). \nCommunities of Practice in the Science Reform Movement – Recognizing and Mobilizing Diverse Contributions to Science Reform \n7:30 am PST / 10:30 am EST / 4:30 pm CEST \nWhen people write and talk about science reform\, they refer to a movement\, or a single community of practice centered on improving how science is done and shared. An ethnography and subsequent network analysis I conducted on the online part of the movement reveals evidence of a much more complex research and activism landscape\, however. My work indicated that while there indeed exists a singular purpose\, or ‘joint enterprise’ which unites much of the science reform’s activity\, the group of people driving the movement tend to organise into smaller clusters within the broader landscape. They group together based on different priorities\, methodologies and even philosophies of science; a constellation of small communities of practice. My talk presents this preliminary research\, and outlines some interesting implications it might have for considering the future of the reform movement. \nThe Decline of Scientific Individualism? \n7:55 am PST / 10:55 am EST / 4:55 pm CEST \nA number of metascience innovations—such as the Psych Science Accelerator\, Many Analysts projects\, the Multi-PART study\, and cloud labs—involve an explicit move away from individuals or small teams as the basic unit of scientific research. This talk will ask whether metascience as a movement might be hastening the decline of scientific individualism (if such a decline is indeed taking place!)\, and what epistemic and social risks might be associated with these changing work practices. \nMeta Makeover: Ditching Dogmas and Raising Standards of Evidence \n8:20 am PST / 11:20 am EST / 5:20 pm CEST \nMetascience and scientific reform have initiated a social movement toward procedural changes in scientific practice. Prioritization of prescriptive recommendations (e.g.\, preregistration\, replication) over theoretical understanding or evidence-based solutions has led to uncritical\, even dogmatic interpretations of reforms. Evidential standards are relaxed when evaluating metascientific results that endorse reforms. Self-serving and self-congratulatory narratives have led to premature metascience hubris. Without intellectual humility\, however\, there is no hope for meaningful progress. I suggest it is time to course correct\, time for (meta)scientists to ditch dogmas and heuristics\, and refocus on science.

SUMMARY:International Love Data Week
DESCRIPTION:The 2025 theme is “Whose Data Is It\, Anyway?” Take a minute to think about who owns data compared to who uses data. Different groups – like researchers\, the government\, companies\, or organizations – may collect data. They could own it\, share it\, publish it online\, or combine it. This year’s Love Data Week wants us to ask ‘Whose Data is it Anyway?’ This helps us remember to think about where the data came from before using it. Use this theme to have fun with your audience using data games or game shows. You could also use it to help people learn more about data literacy. Or you could talk about being responsible when dealing with important issues involving data. \nEvents and activities \nView all 2025 Love Data Week events and activities happening locally and virtually around the world.

SUMMARY:Human motivation in research environments\, 12th online meeting of the RItrainPlus Community of Practice
DESCRIPTION:Summary \nWe are excited to invite you to the 12th online meeting of the RItrainPlus Community of Practice. The webinar is aimed at managers\, operators and other professionals in Research Infrastructures and Core Facilities. \nDescription \nHuman motivation is a key factor for successful professional development. The theory of self-determination\, promoted by professors Edward Deci and Richard Ryan\, and based on positive psychology\, states that human beings share a core of psychological needs that are reflected in different personal and professional contexts. In this session\, we will discuss the relevance of intrinsic or autonomous motivation compared to extrinsic or controlled motivation\, as well as the fundamental elements that concern: \nthe sense of volition and having the experience of choice (autonomy); \nthe ability to master the specific environment (competence); \nand feeling related to others (relatedness). \nWe will also address the process that allows us to move towards an internalization of motivation and what strategies we can use to place it at the centre of our professional experience. Finally\, we will analyse several examples that allow us to contextualize intrinsic motivation and its three components in professional spaces linked to research management. \nSpeakers: \nJuan Luis Fuentes (Complutense University of Madrid) \nModerator: Concha Gil (Complutense University of Madrid) \nJoin the meeting (13th of March  2025\, 12.00-13.30 CET) through the RitrainPlus Community of Practice Facebook group or view the Zoom recording. \nYou can join the event also via Zoom.

SUMMARY:Infra4NextGen Webinar: Using social surveys to answer research questions
DESCRIPTION:Summary \nHow can social scientists design and focus their research to ensure they can answer questions using existing data? How do researchers find relevant data for a specific project? In this webinar\, three research fellows working on the Infra4NextGen project will share their experience in navigating the wealth of publicly available survey data. \nDescription \nYuliya Kazakova (Netherlands Interdisciplinary Demographic Institute)\, David Consolazio (University of Milan) and Ruxandra Comănaru (City St George’s\, University of London) will draw on their hands-on experience with this project to discuss how to refine research questions and where to find answers. \nThe webinar will cover strategies to design a social research question and focus on how to answer it. This will consider both a bottoms up approach (what data is available in this field to study the concepts of interest?) and a top-down one (where and how can I find relevant data for a specific topic?) \nWhat to expect: \nA brief theoretical overview of strategies to design a good research question \nLearn where to find European survey data: European Social Survey (ESS)\, European Values Study (EVS)\, Generations and Gender Programme (GGP)\, International Social Survey Programme (ISSP)\, European Quality of Life Survey (EQLS)\, and Eurobarometer \nUsing online tools to do preliminary analysis (e.g.\, the ESS Data Portal\, GGP teaching datasets and others) \nBy the end of the seminar\, you should be able to: \nRecognise if your question is too broad or whether it is specific enough \nDistil the question into concepts \nLook for indicators to link to your concepts in existing data sources \nUndertake basic data analysis using online tools \nPlease note that we will not be discussing specific analysis techniques but rather direct you to existing platforms that can be a good starting point for the more complex analysis.  \nAbout the speakers: \nDr Yuliya Kazakova is a research fellow for GGP based at the Netherlands Interdisciplinary Demographic Institute (NIDI KNAW). Her work centres on the ‘Make it Equal‘ and ‘Make it Strong‘ pillars in the Infra4NextGen project. This involves close collaboration with leading European academics\, the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre experts\, and the Youth Board to engage young Europeans in data-driven discussion on key issues for future generations. Yuliya’s research interests lie in the field of health economics together with the evaluation of public policies with a particular focus on childhood health\, childhood poverty and maternal employment. \nDr David Consolazio is Assistant Professor at the Department of Social and Political Sciences of the University of Milan. Within the Infra4NextGen project\, he works mainly on the ‘Make it Digital‘ and ‘Make it Healthy‘ pillars. David’s research interests lie at the intersection of sociology\, epidemiology\, and urban studies\, focusing on the interplay of individual and contextual-level factors in shaping health and social outcomes\, with particular attention on the social determinants of health and residential segregation phenomena. \nDr Ruxandra Comănaru is a research fellow at the European Social Survey HQ based at City St George’s\, University of London. She is primarily working on the ‘Make it Green‘ pillar within the Infra4NextGen project\, as well as coordinating the collaboration between the other strands of the project. Ruxandra’s research interests include the design and adaptation of surveys for mixed modes of data collection\, with a focus on enhancing the methodological accuracy of self-completion methods. She is also interested in questionnaire design\, translation and cultural equivalence of research concepts.

SUMMARY:Secondary Publication Rights for research. What are the options to openly publish your research?
DESCRIPTION:Across Europe\, researchers may have the legal right to make their work openly accessible – even if published behind a paywall – thanks to Secondary Publication Rights (SPRs). Yet many are unaware of this right or unsure how to take advantage of it. \n\n\n\nJoin us at an online event on Monday 19 May at 10-12 CEST to learn how SPRs work and how these rights are implemented in Europe (in Germany\, France\, the Netherlands\, Belgium\, Austria\, and Bulgaria). Hear real-world experiences from researchers and librarians and explore how SPRs can support open science and increase the visibility of your work. \n\n\n\nThe event is open to all but particularly designed for researchers\, and the university professionals who support them\,including librarians\, repository managers\, and research administrators.  \n\n\n\nRegister to attend here! \n\n\n\nOrganised by INSPIRING ERA in collaboration with the IP4OS project as part of a series of online events to support the implementation of the European Research Area (ERA) Policy Agenda.
