The workshop is held from 9-11:30 the first day\, 9:30 to 13:30 the second day. Speaker 1 : Assoc. Prof. Dr. Franz Eder\, Department of Political Science (University of Innsbruck) – Speaker 2 : Anita Bodlos\, MA (University of Innsbruck)  \nDescription \nIn the first part of this two-day workshop\, participants will learn the basics of open science and reproducible research. They will learn the difference between replicability and computational reproducibility\, know what FAIR data is\, and be aware of how to handle personal and sensitive data. In the second part\, the participants learn the basic reproducible research workflow for the three main stages of research (i.e. data acquisition\, data processing\, and data analysis) by using tools such as RStudio\, Jupyter Notebooks\, and the version control system GIT. Participants will know how to organize a research project using RStudio and Jupyter Notebooks\, how to use Quarto and Markdown for documenting the research steps\, how to organize files and folders\, and how to use the version control system GIT for collaboration.

SUMMARY:Symposium: Critical Perspectives on the Metascience Reform Movement
DESCRIPTION:Metascience is often defined as the scientific investigation of science itself with the aim to improve science. This ‘improving’ part of metascience has been called a reform movement. While the intention to improve science is generally laudable\, metascience and the associated movement(s) are not without their critics. The metascience reform movement has for instance been characterized as among other things\, neoliberal\, positivistic\, atheoretical\, technological\, moralizing\, bureaucratic\, homogenizing\, mechanistic\, quantitative\, psychological (psychologizing)\, social\, civilizing\, bullying\, exclusive\, coercive\, activist\, and normative. In this symposium some of those critical perspectives will be presented and discussed. \nWelcome \n6:00 am PST / 9:00 am EST / 3:00 pm CEST \nOpening remarks from Tim Errington\, COS’s Senior Director of Research\, and Sven Ulpts\, PhD Fellow\, Aarhus University\, Department of Political Science – Danish Centre for Studies in Research and Research Policy. \nShamed Into Good Science \n6:10 am PST / 9:10 am EST / 3:10 pm CESTScientific reform has proposed various improvements to the research process\, some of which have been put into place. These proposals\, or innovations\, include preregistration\, registered reports\, post-registration\, (data) sharing infrastructures and -platforms and more. However\, beyond the ‘process innovations’\, scientific reform also generated new forms of collaboration towards knowledge-making in which novel approaches to harnessing trust and distrust are built into the collaboration\, including but not limited to ManyLabs approaches. The many “ManyLabs” in existence display diverse and experimental epistemic and moral strategies and ideals for scientific organisation and practice. I will speak about the social processes that drive these new processes and colaborations. \nThe Invisible Workload of Open Research \n6:35 am PST / 9:35 am EST / 3:35 pm CEST \nIt is acknowledged that conducting open research requires additional time and effort compared to conducting ‘closed’ research. However\, this additional work is often discussed only in abstract terms\, a discourse which ignores the practicalities of how researchers are expected to find the time to engage with these practices in the context of their broader role as multifaceted academics. There is a clear danger that additional expectations to engage in open practices add to the workload of often already overburdened academics and research professionals. Using theories of administrative burden and workload creep\, I discuss individual and systematic responsibilities to mitigate this. \nWhy Replication Is Underrated \n7:00 am PST / 10:00 am EST / 4:00 pm CEST \nI will argue that replication is underrated because it can do more epistemic work than is usually acknowledged. In the current philosophical and metascientific literature replication is depicted as a backward-looking tool: it is used to increase trust in published data. I will argue that replication also plays an important forward-looking role\, as it can help researchers to build trust in novel data that is being generated. To understand this forward-looking role it is important to build a better understanding of the ways in which replication is deeply integrated into everyday research practice (Guttinger 2019; Peterson and Panofsky 2021). \nCommunities of Practice in the Science Reform Movement – Recognizing and Mobilizing Diverse Contributions to Science Reform \n7:30 am PST / 10:30 am EST / 4:30 pm CEST \nWhen people write and talk about science reform\, they refer to a movement\, or a single community of practice centered on improving how science is done and shared. An ethnography and subsequent network analysis I conducted on the online part of the movement reveals evidence of a much more complex research and activism landscape\, however. My work indicated that while there indeed exists a singular purpose\, or ‘joint enterprise’ which unites much of the science reform’s activity\, the group of people driving the movement tend to organise into smaller clusters within the broader landscape. They group together based on different priorities\, methodologies and even philosophies of science; a constellation of small communities of practice. My talk presents this preliminary research\, and outlines some interesting implications it might have for considering the future of the reform movement. \nThe Decline of Scientific Individualism? \n7:55 am PST / 10:55 am EST / 4:55 pm CEST \nA number of metascience innovations—such as the Psych Science Accelerator\, Many Analysts projects\, the Multi-PART study\, and cloud labs—involve an explicit move away from individuals or small teams as the basic unit of scientific research. This talk will ask whether metascience as a movement might be hastening the decline of scientific individualism (if such a decline is indeed taking place!)\, and what epistemic and social risks might be associated with these changing work practices. \nMeta Makeover: Ditching Dogmas and Raising Standards of Evidence \n8:20 am PST / 11:20 am EST / 5:20 pm CEST \nMetascience and scientific reform have initiated a social movement toward procedural changes in scientific practice. Prioritization of prescriptive recommendations (e.g.\, preregistration\, replication) over theoretical understanding or evidence-based solutions has led to uncritical\, even dogmatic interpretations of reforms. Evidential standards are relaxed when evaluating metascientific results that endorse reforms. Self-serving and self-congratulatory narratives have led to premature metascience hubris. Without intellectual humility\, however\, there is no hope for meaningful progress. I suggest it is time to course correct\, time for (meta)scientists to ditch dogmas and heuristics\, and refocus on science.

On the one hand\, data from social media\, as well as sensor data\, are of growing interest in psychology. On the other hand\, science is producing more publications and at a higher rate\, making it increasingly difficult to keep track of the current state of knowledge.In recent years\, machine learning has become a key tool to address these challenges. Methodological advancements along with freely available software\, as well as advances in data storage and computational capacities\, make it possible to deal with data of large volume\, velocity\, and variety. There are also promising applications for summarizing scientific evidence\, for example\, through automation in screening a large and dynamically growing body of literature.At the same time\, open science plays an important role: On the one hand\, to create more efficient workflows by sharing data\, methodological documentation\, technical tools and analysis scripts within science. Especially when applying machine learning methods\, transparent documentation and provision of the analysis code are indispensable for their reproducibility. On the other hand\, to make scientific evidence accessible and usable by communicating it to the outside world in a way that is understandable to laypersons. The symposium is scheduled to take place in Frankfurt am Main\, Germany\, in May 2023 and will last three days. On the first day\, introductions to open science and machine learning will provide the basics to the audience. The second day addresses different applications of machine learning\, with a focus on the areas of sensor data and social media\, as well as automation of research syntheses. Finally\, the third day is devoted to the importance and purposeful practices of open science: To improve workflows within science and make findings more available and understandable to the world beyond academia.

DESCRIPTION:U okviru projekta COORDINATE\, koji vodi Manchester Metropolitan University i u kojem sudjeluju Institut Ivo Pilar (voditelj Toni Babarović) i CROSSDA – Hrvatski arhiv podataka za društvene znanosti / Filozofski fakultet u Zagrebu (voditeljica Marijana Glavica)\, organiziramo radionicu o pohrani i objavi podataka u arhivu CROSSDA. Jedan od zadataka unutar projekta je identificirati te u arhiv CROSSDA pokušati pohraniti skupove istraživačkih podataka relevantnih za temu projekta COORDINATE – podataka koji se tiču dobrobiti djece i mladih. \n\n\n\nRadionica je namijenjena primarno voditeljima i suradnicima kvantitativnih istraživanja koji su tijekom svibnja i lipnja 2022. dostavili podatke za projekte prepoznate kao relevantne i adekvatne za potencijalno arhiviranje\, ali na radionicu su pozvani i svi drugi zaposlenici Instituta\, istraživači u području društvenih znanosti\, zainteresirani za usluge arhiva CROSSDA. \n\n\n\nCilj radionice je upoznati istraživače s procedurama pohrane i objave podataka u arhivu CROSSDA te ih motivirati na pohranu podataka.  \n\n\n\nObjasnit ćemo osnovne preduvjete za pohranu: prikupljanje dokumentacije\, čišćenje podataka te osiguravanje potrebne razine anonimizacije.  \n\n\n\nDemonstrirat ćemo sustav za objavu podataka data.crossda.hr i proći kroz metapodatke koje je potrebno unijeti.   \n\n\n\nObjasnit ćemo standardne licence koje se koriste pri objavi podataka: otvoreni pristup i pristup ograničen samo za znanstvene svrhe te u svrhu podučavanja.  \n\n\n\nDotaknut ćemo se pravnih (GDPR\, autorska prava) i etičkih pitanja. \n\n\n\nRazgovarat ćemo o nedoumicama i preprekama koje se mogu pojaviti prilikom pohrane i objave podataka.

DESCRIPTION:This Safe Researcher Training (SRT) course is intended for researchers who will be\, or are in the process of\, applying for access to controlled data in the UK Data Service Secure Lab. It is also suitable for researchers who will be accessing controlled data in other secure environments\, such as the ONS Secure Research Service or HMRC Datalab\, where the requirements of access mandate attendance on a Safe Researcher Training course. It is not suitable for inexperienced researchers whose project applications are unlikely to be approved\, such as undergraduates applying for dissertation projects. \nResearchers who are applying for Accredited Researcher (AR) status to access data through legal gateways\, such as the Digital Economy Act (DEA)\, must attend and pass this course before they can be awarded AR status. \nThis course covers: \nData security and personal responsibility\, including legal and procedural breaches and penalties\, and the ‘5 Safes’ security model.Statistical Disclosure Control – how to make statistical outputs safe for release and the principles employed.Using the Secure Lab – how to use the environment efficiently and effectively (includes preparation of data imports and statistical outputs). \nResearchers who attend the course will be sent a link after the training to complete an online assessment. Many journals can only ask that detailed access procedures be provided in a ReadMe file\, but what mechanisms could be used to conduct computational reproducibility checks on such data? Is it feasible to use a network of “insiders” to run code provided as part of a data replication package to assess reproducibility? SUMMARY:GESIS Meet the experts: “Linking surveys with electoral integrity assessments to explain political trust”
DESCRIPTION:This talk presents a linking approach that combines expert assessments on electoral integrity with survey data to study how electoral integrity affects the way in which election results translate into citizen attitudes towards the political system. It introduces a causal mechanism that links political losing to political trust via evaluations of electoral fairness: citizens who voted for the losing camp are more likely to view the electoral process as unfair than citizens who voted for the winning camp\, resulting in political distrust. It further suggests that the effects of political losing depend on the level of electoral integrity. In conditions where elections are conducted in a free and fair manner\, even those who voted for the losing camp have little reason to suspect foul play. Whenever there are actual indications of electoral malpractice\, however\, political losers have much more reason to doubt the integrity of the electoral process than those who are content with the election outcome. The analysis makes use of a unique dataset that ex-post harmonizes survey data from three cross-national survey projects (Asian Barometer Survey\, European Social Survey\, Latinobarómetro) and links this survey data with expert assessments of electoral integrity provided by the Varieties-of-Democracy (V-Dem) project to cover 45 democracies in Europe\, East Asia\, and Latin America. The talk details how respondents (in the survey data) were matched to elections (in the V-Dem data) and discusses challenges arising from survey fieldwork periods not being aligned with election cycles. \nSpeaker: \nDr. Marlene Mauk

SUMMARY:Train the Trainer: Anonymisation for data sharing in practice
DESCRIPTION:Summary \nThe goal of this event is to show trainers the tools they need to teach the fundamentals of data anonymisation and disclosure control in training sessions while also giving them hands-on experience with current open source technologies (sdcMicro). \nDescription \nOver the past few years\, there has been a noticeable growth in both the need for and the volume of data from surveys\, registers\, or other sources that hold information about individuals and/or institutions. At the same time\, rules and privacy protection principles have placed regulations on who can access and use personal data. Therefore\, application of statistical disclosure control measures (anonymisation) to the data prior to its release is required for proper and secure data sharing. \nIn the first part\, Jan Dalsten Sørensen from the Danish National Archives (DNA) will guide you through our anonymisation process and the thoughts behind it. The DNA contains a large collection of data\, collected from both scientific research and from the public administration. Of course\, anonymisation is a great tool to utilise the great scientific potential in these data without compromising the integrity of the data subjects personal information. However\, it is not always easy to handle in practice. In this part of the event you will learn more about how we work in a dialogue-based way with the staff involved in the anonymisation process. \nSecond part of the event will consist of two 45-minute sessions and a Q&A session afterward. SUMMARY:Ecological consumption and production
DESCRIPTION:A clean environment and sustainability are of fundamental importance for human health and well-being. Therefore\, we are organizing a timely data discovery event on Ecological consumption and production. There will be a brief introduction of the organizing data archive (ČSDA) and some of the data it contains regarding the environment and sustainability in a broader sense but also data that can be found on this topic elsewhere. The introduction will be followed by two presentations that draw on the data that either is already publicly available or is expected to be shortly. After each presentation\, there will be time for the questions from the audience. Especially researchers are encouraged to participate\, but the event could be of interest to a wider audience. The event is part of the CESSDA training activities. \nProgram: \n14:00 – 14:20: “Czech social science data archive as a gateway to data (not only) on ecological consumption and production”\, Martin Vávra (Czech Social Science Data Archive) \nThe introductory presentation will introduce the Czech Social Science Data Archive (ČSDA) and available environmental data with an emphasis on ecological consumption and production. \n14:20 – 15:00: “Sociological insights into the food gardening in the heart of Europe”\, Jan Vávra \nThe presentation will focus on home gardening (labelled often also as food self-provisioning) in the context of modern society. The representative dataset based on the questionnaires filled by more than two thousands Czech respondents in 2015 will be introduced and some of already published research will be presented. This insight into the available data accompanied with a little bit of theory will illustrate which sociological\, but also geographic\, economic or environmental aspects could be researched and what questions about sustainability of contemporary food systems and the role of gardening within society researchers could ask. \nJan Vávra works in the Department of Local and Regional Studies of the Institute of Sociology of the Czech Academy of Sciences. He is an environmental sociologist nowadays mostly dealing with the social\, health and environmental context of gardening as informal food production. Jan is co-chair of the Environmental and Rural Section of the Czech Sociological Society. \n15:00 – 15:30: “Environmental behaviour of Czech households and individuals with a focus on food waste”\, Radka Hanzlová \nFood waste is a significant social\, environmental\, and economic problem that is often overlooked. At the same time\, it is an issue that everyone can contribute to solving through their behaviour. In my presentation I would therefore like to look at the problem of food waste primarily in relation to the environment\, focusing on individuals and households. What do people buy food on? Do people think about the environmental impact of the production of the food they buy and consume? Is the way people eat related to their environmental mind-set? What environmentally friendly activities do people do in their households? Do people buy organic food? These are not the only questions I will answer in my presentation. The results are based on data from the representative surveys “Food” carried out within the framework of the research programme of the AV21 Strategy – Food for the Future and “Our Society” carried out by the Public Opinion Research Centre. \nRadka Hanzlová is a PhD student in Sociology at the Faculty of Arts of Charles University and works as a researcher at the Public Opinion Research Centre of the Institute of Sociology of the Czech Academy of Sciences\, where she deals with the research topic “Food Waste as a Global and Local Problem”.

SUMMARY:New Data Types in Data Management and Archiving
DESCRIPTION:Summary \nNew Data Types in Data Management and Archiving workshop will focus on the management\, archiving and access to new types of data\, i.e. administrative\, transactional and social media data. The program will consist of four presentations tackling various issues related to handling the new types of data in data repositories and sharing these data in the community of social researchers. The speakers’ presentations will be followed by the panel discussion\, where audience members are encouraged to participate and bring in their own experiences of archivists\, data managers and researchers. The event is part of the CESSDA training activities. \nProgram: \n14:00 – 14:20: “Current capacities among CESSDA SPs for handling new data types”\, Martin Vávra (Czech Social Science Data Archive) \nThe talk will be focused on the current strengths and weaknesses of the CESSDA archives with regard to handling new types of data. The presentation relies on findings from a survey of CESSDA Service Providers carried in 2021\, and brings forward information about the archives’ strategies for the handling of new data types\, as well as their actual experience with the new types of data. \n14:20 – 14:40: “Proposals for a More Coordinated Approach to Handling New Data Types Across CESSDA SPs”\, Brian Kleiner (FORS) \nThis presentation will put forward several proposals for a range of activities that could be implemented within CESSDA to help SPs better coordinate and benefit from synergies with respect to handling new data types. The aim will be to stimulate discussion among SPs about how such proposals could be put into action in a realistic way\, given limited resources.  \n14:40 – 15:00: “Social Media Data Sharing in Social Research”\, Yevhen Voronin (GESIS) \nThe talk will present the results from an online survey of social scientists using social media data for their research and having published journal articles based on social media data between 2018 and 2021. The presentation will cover reasons why researchers do not share social media data and challenges while sharing (or considering to share) these data\, and predictors of different intentions to share social media data. \n15:00 – 15:20: “Social Science in the Embattled Digital Age: Adversarial Creation\, Use and Sharing of New Data Types”\, Pascal Jurgens (Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz) \nThis presentation will introduce a data scientist’s personal experiences regarding new data types – from data collection\, self-archiving\, analysis\, and publishing across open data/open source and commercial projects\, along with ethical implications. It will include ethical\, legal\, political and pragmatic perspectives regarding future challenges and opportunities for archives. \n15:20 – 15:30: Break \n15:30 – 16:20: The panel discussion

SUMMARY:Online workshop: Using the Geographical Information System QGIS for data analysis
DESCRIPTION:Geographical and georeferenced data are gaining increasing importance in social science research. For example\, it is becoming more common to add geographical data related to the social or physical environment as contextual variables to social surveys or to aggregate social survey results at various geographical scales. Using geographical data in our research necessitates additional analytical skills and workflows\, usually related to some sort of Geographical Information System (GIS). GIS can be defined as a collection of tools to process\, analyze and visualize data containing spatial information; such tools have been developed as “packages” for statistical software R or for the programming language Python\, but these require intermediate to advanced coding skills. On the other hand\, there are also GIS software solutions by various corporations which may be unaffordable for certain contexts\, such as independent researchers of non-governmental organisations. \nFor this workshop we will be using the free and open source software QGIS\, which is widely available and fully maintained by a strong community of volunteers and supporting organisations. In addition to the main QGIS software\, there is a wide range of training material produced by the QGIS community and many educational and research institutes. \nIn this workshop\, participants will learn how to use QGIS for basic data processing and introductory spatial analysis. DESCRIPTION:Hrvatska udruga za znanstvenu komunikaciju – ZNAK i Hrvatski arhiv podataka za društvene znanosti CROSSDA organiziraju webinar “Uloga časopisa u poticanju pristupa istraživačkim podacima” koji će se održati 5. srpnja 2022. od 14:00 do 15:30\, uz pomož platforme Zoom. \nPrijavite se na adresi: https://www.znak.hr/index.php/webinar \nDostupnost istraživačkih podataka uz članke koji se objavljuju u časopisima polako\, ali sigurno\, postaje uobičajena praksa u znanstvenoj komunikaciji. Europska komisija i drugi financijeri znanstvenih istraživanja postavili su visoka očekivanja pred znanstvenike u smjeru što veće otvorenosti i dostupnosti svih oblika znanstvenog rada i rezultata. No\, upravo su znanstveni časopisi\, zbog njihove važne uloge u znanstvenoj komunikaciji\, glavna točka ostvarivanja otvorene znanosti u praksi. \nHrvatske časopise često ističemo kao posebno uspješan primjer implementacije otvorenog pristupa znanstvenim člancima. Posebno je vrijedno to što je većina hrvatskih časopisa u otvorenom pristupu odabrala dijamantni put\, ne naplaćujući naknade autorima i čitateljima\, što je unutar EU prepoznato kao najbolji način osiguravanja jednakosti\, raznolikosti\, uključivosti i višejezičnosti. Usklađivanje standarda kvalitete časopisa na europskoj razini\, postizanje veće vjerodostojnosti objavljenih radova i transparentnosti cijelog istraživačkog procesa sljedeći je korak\, pri čemu dostupnost istraživačkih podataka u podlozi objavljenih rezultata ima izuzetno važnu ulogu. \nKako se ovaj segment otvorene znanosti u Hrvatskoj još uvijek nedovoljno razmatra\, odlučili smo organizirati webinar kojim bismo potaknuli razgovor o važnosti pristupa istraživačkim podacima\, prikazali zahtjeve financijera znanstvenih istraživanja\, predstavili postojeće smjernice za implementaciju uredničkih politika o dostupnosti istraživačkih podataka i raspoloživu infrastrukturu za pohranu i pristup podacima\, te se osvrnuli na glavne izazove s kojima se urednici i autori mogu suočiti. \nVeselimo se zajedničkoj raspravi o ovim važnim temama.
